There are limited details of the life of Christopher Condent before piracy and it was possible, he was born in Plymouth anywhere around 1700 but nothing can be verified. Even his name had become a mystery as it ranged from William, Christopher, Edmond, or John, and the last name of Connor, Condent, Congdon, Condell. He was among the pirates who left the area of New Providence shortly after the newly installed governor of the Bahamas Woodes Rogers was tasked with ridding the region of all pirates. Along with his crew, they plundered a ship laden with Portuguese wine in the vicinity of the Cape Verde Islands. His reputation for cruelty spread that those who were captured endured cutting off the ears and noses of Portuguese prisoners.
After voyaging to Brazil and more successful plunders he later seized a warship and renamed it The Fiery Dragon. On one such excursion, he murdered one of his crew trying to blow up the vessel by setting fire to the gunpowder and this led to the crew choosing sides and part of them left on a captured ship. Tiring of the pirate life he decided in 1721 with 40 of his followers to secure a pardon from a French governor and with the agreement to relocate to an island as a residence. Condent subsequently married the governor's sister-in-law and chose to relocate to France in 1723 to live out his days as a prosperous merchant. He had a unique flag while in the profession of pirate of three skulls and crossbones on a black background.
